Dear Neighbor,
When the Meekins Library opens at noon on Tuesday, there’s a line of people waiting to get in. Some walk straight to a computer, while others head for the new books. Young parents wave to a child just leaving the library after a school visit. Retired residents take a stroll or pick up their mail before stopping at the library to browse.
Since reopening in August of 2003, Meekins has contributed more than ever to a warm sense of community and “business” has burgeoned—our library is the 4th busiest library per capita in the state, and our small paid staff of 2.4 circulates over 35,000 items a year per full time employee! Much of this happens during the 21 hours the library is open weekly.
Two years ago, due to budget constraints, the Board of Library Trustees reluctantly cut Wednesday evening hours and some Saturday hours at the library; our hardworking staff was stretched too thin. Our troop of dedicated volunteers continues to provide vital assistance, but they cannot perform many essential tasks.
The Library Board’s first annual appeal will support patron requests for more hours at the library, more programs to open the world of reading for our children, as well as meet the community’s appetite for books and information to inspire a lifetime of learning for all.

Since December the Board has been asking members of our community to help kick-start the first annual fund. Thanks to twenty individuals and families, including all the board members, we’re almost halfway to meeting the goal. Won’t you join them?
